Dear 2045 by Katie Ann (2025)

We're killing the earth, and that's really fun
No one believes us because we are young
Our forests are burning to ash in a second
Ask California, they'll tell you about it

They'll tell you how big they've have lost all their homes
Trump turns a blind eye and Tweets on his phone
Global Warming's an expensive little hoax

For the last time, this is not a joke

Our factories are working and toxin's emitting
Our ozone, are cr-, is crumbling and no
No, we won't stop putting the chemicals
In what we're trying to breathe
Our future is stolen, and we are the thieves

The sea levels are rising, and icebergs are melting
The coral reefs are dying, and no one is helping
Don't you realize they keep the oceans alive?
This started back in 1985

So don't come to me when your child can't breathe
Of what a tiger is cause they're extinct
Don't cry to me when your fur coat isn't clean
Endang-, the endangered list is now 41,416

Dear 2045
I don't think we're gonna survive
If you end up hearing this story

I just wanna say
I'm sorry

In Katie Ann's song "Dear 2045", the singer is pleading for the listeners of the song to take action in regards to climate change, and the damage it's causing to our planet. With the opening lyrics "We're killing the earth, and that's really fun, No one believes us because we are young", the songwriter is addressing the misconception that young people cannot have a say or a contribution in such matters. The second verse talks about the effects of climate change on the environment - forest fires, melting icebergs and rising ocean levels. The bridge of the song highlights that our future is being stolen, and that every human being is partly responsible for climate change. She highlights that unless we take action now, there may not be a future for generations to come, and even animals that we identify with will no longer exist (tiger being one example).

We're killing the earth, and that's really fun
We are consciously contributing to destroying the environment and enjoying doing so.

No one believes us because we are young
Our youth is a barrier to being taken seriously when expressing valid concerns about the environment.

Our forests are burning to ash in a second
Forest fires are happening at an alarming rate, destroying natural habitats and causing air pollution.

Ask California, they'll tell you about it
California has experienced firsthand the devastation of forest fires and their effect on communities.

They'll tell you how big they've have lost all their homes
People in California have lost their homes due to the effects of forest fires.

Trump turns a blind eye and Tweets on his phone
The President, instead of taking action, ignores or dismisses concerns about climate change on social media.

Global Warming's an expensive little hoax
Some people believe climate change is a false concept that costs resources to combat.

For the last time, this is not a joke
The reality of climate change is a serious matter that is not something to be joked about or ignored.

Our factories are working and toxin's emitting
Industries continue to operate and release harmful chemicals into the environment.

Our ozone, are cr-, is crumbling and no
The ozone layer, which protects the Earth from the sun's harmful rays, is damaged and decreasing in size.

No, we won't stop putting the chemicals
Individuals and companies refuse to stop using chemicals that harm the environment.

In what we're trying to breathe
Chemicals and pollutants negatively affect the air we breathe.

Our future is stolen, and we are the thieves
Our generation is responsible for stealing the possibility of a sustainable future because we refuse to change our ways.

The sea levels are rising, and icebergs are melting
Global warming is causing the polar ice caps to melt, causing sea levels to rise at an alarming rate.

The coral reefs are dying, and no one is helping
Coral reefs, which are vital to ocean ecosystems, are dying due to pollution and climate change, and efforts to protect them are insufficient.

Don't you realize they keep the oceans alive?
Coral reefs help sustain ocean life and play a critical role in maintaining a healthy marine ecosystem.

This started back in 1985
The issue of climate change and the need for environmental action has been recognized since the mid-1980s.

So don't come to me when your child can't breathe
If we don't take action now, we will be responsible for the negative impact on future generations' health and well-being.

Of what a tiger is cause they're extinct
We will be responsible for causing the extinction of animal species, like tigers, if we don't take action now.

Don't cry to me when your fur coat isn't clean
The negative effects of pollution and environmental destruction will eventually be felt by all, including those who currently dismiss them.

Endang-, the endangered list is now 41,416
The number of endangered species is alarmingly high and continues to grow due to environmental destruction and climate change.

Dear 2045
This song is addressed to the year 2045, a time when the damage caused by climate change will likely be fully felt.

I don't think we're gonna survive
If we continue to ignore climate change, the future looks bleak for both the environment and humanity.

If you end up hearing this story
This song serves as a message to future generations about the actions of our generation.

I just wanna say
The songwriter wants to express regret for the negative impact of our actions.

I'm sorry
The songwriter is expressing remorse for the harm caused by our inaction on climate change and environmental destruction.
