Socorro, NM 2009

Plans are in the very early stages for a mining artifact collectors show in Socorro, NM in November of 2009. The organizers of this event are (at this time) myself, Kelly Ramsel of Socorro and Gary Canning of Albuquerque. Our goal is to have our mining show held in concert with the 30th annual New Mexico Mineral Symposium which will consist of a day and a half of formal papers presented in 30-minute time blocks at New Mexico Tech, a technology focussed university formerly known as the NM School of Mines. Presented papers will focus on mineral occurrences from New Mexico and adjacent states, as well as Mexico. Informal pre-symposium social and tailgating sessions are held at local motels generally starting on Friday.

The Symposium is held on the second full weekend of November of every year. The weather is generally perfect and there are possibilities for our mining group to go on an organized tour of surface or underground mines in the area. We even have local mining claim holders on the organizing committee!

A silent auction, sponsored by the Albuquerque Gem and Mineral Club for the benefit of the Mineral Museum, will be held on Sunday afternoon. The auction will be open to the public and all interested may buy or sell. In general, coordination with the Symposium offers an opportunity for cross-fertilization and a broader range of activities than our usual artifact shows. NM Tech boasts a fabulous mineral museum complete with some mining artifacts. The NM State Mining Engineer Bob Eveleth might do a special presentation for us about mining in NM backed with the NM Bureau of Mines artifact collection. Bob has decades of experience in mining history and with the mining industry and would be an exceptionally interesting speaker.

As mentioned, we are in formative stages of planning for this event and details will be forthcoming as we discover opportunities and limitations. The organizing committee, nmprospector, NM Jack, and gr8tins, would welcome your questions and suggestions for this show since it is very different from our traditional format and offers some exciting possibilities. They can be contacted via the Eureka Forum under Upcoming Collector Shows.
